The President:
The President of the Republic of Armenia is the head of State. The President ensures adherence to the Constitution and provides for regular functioning of legislative, executive and judicial authorities. The President is the guarantor of Republic of Armenia's sovereignty, territorial integrity and security. The President of Republic is elected by the citizens of the Republic of Armenia for a five year term of office.

The Executive Power:

Executive power is exercised by RA Government. The Government is composed of Prime Minister and Ministers. Based on consultations held with National Assembly factions, the President of Republic appoints the person nominated by the parliamentary majority to be Prime Minister or - where impossible - the person nominated by the largest number of NA membership. The President of the Republic appoints and discharges members of government on Prime Minister's proposal.

The Legislative Power:

The single-chambered National Assembly is the supreme legislative authority of the Republic of Armenia. The National Assembly consists of 131 deputies /75 of which are elected on the basis of proportional representation and 56 - majority representation/. The National Assembly is elected through general elections for a term of five years. Parliamentary elections were last held in 2003.

The Judicial Power:

In the Republic of Armenia justice shall be administered solely by the courts in accordance with the Constitution and the laws. The courts operating in the Republic of Armenia are the first instance court of general jurisdiction, the courts of appeal, the Court of Cassation, as well as specialized courts in cases prescribed by the law. The highest court instance in the Republic of Armenia, except for matters of constitutional justice, is the Court of Cassation, which shall ensure uniformity in the implementation of the law. The Constitutional Court shall administer the constitutional justice in the Republic of Armenia. The independence of courts shall be guaranteed by the Constitution and laws. The Constitution and the law shall define the procedure for the formation and activities of the Council of Justice. The Office of the Prosecutor General in the Republic of Armenia represents a unified, centralized system, headed by the Prosecutor General. The Office of the Prosecutor General shall operate within the powers granted by the Constitution and on the basis of the law.

200px-serzh_sargsyan.jpgSerzh Azati Sargsyan is the current President of Armenia. He won the February 2008 presidential election with the backing of the conservative Republican Party of Armenia, a party in which he serves as chairman,and took office in April 2008.

Personal details

Serzh Sargsyan was born on June 30, 1954 in Stepanakert, Nagorno-Karabakh. He was admitted to Yerevan State University in 1971, served in the Soviet Armed Forces during 1971-72, and graduated from the Philological Department of Yerevan State University in 1979. In 1983, he married his wife, Rita. They have two daughters, Anush and Satenik, and one granddaughter, Mariam. He is the chairman of the Chess Federation of Armenia.

Presidency

Serzh Sargsyan was sworn in as President inside the Yerevan Opera House on April 9. Referring to the "painful events" that followed the election, he "urged everybody to look forward, together, to seek and find the way for reconciliation, development, and future of Armenia." He appointed Tigran Sargsyan, who had been the Chairman of the Central Bank and is not a member of a political party, as Prime Minister. Vazgen Manukyan, a former member of the Karabakh Committee and a prominent oppositionist, stated that he is optimistic and "will do everything to help this government become successful". On April 18, Sargsyan launched an unusually blistering attack on the Armenian customs, saying that "corruption within its ranks is 'thriving' and hampering the countrys economic development." He later authorized an opposition to take place in Yerevan and pledged to comply with the Council of Europe's demands for an end to the government's crackdown on the opposition.

1.jpgTigran Sargsyan has been the Prime Minister of Armenia since 9 April 2008. He is no relation to the current President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan.

Personal details

Tigran Sargsyan was born in Kirovakan, present-day Vanadzor, Armenia. From 1980 to 1983, he attended Leningrad's Voznesenski Financial and Economic Institute. From 1983 to 1987 his postgraduate education ended in obtaining PhD degree. From 1987 to 1990 he worked as the Chief of Department for Foreign Economic Relations of Scientific Researches Institute of Economic Planning in Armenia. From 1988 to 1993 he worked at the post of Chairman of republican Council of Young Specialists and Scientists. From 1990 to 1995 he was a member of Supreme Council of the Republic of Armenia and the Chair of Standing Commission for Financial, Credit and Budget Affairs. From 1995 to 1998 he was the Director of Scientific Researches Institute of Social Reforms. From 1995 to 1998 he was the Chairman of Armenian Banks Association. Sargsyan occupied the post of CBA Chairman from March 3, 1998 and was reelected by the Armenian National Assembly as CBA Chairman for a second seven-year term on March 2, 2005. As many as 92 MPs participated in the vote, of which 86 cast their vote for his candidacy.
He was CBA Chairman until April 9, 2008, when he was appointed as Prime Minister of Armenia by President Serzh Sargsyan upon the latter's inauguration.
Sargsyan is married and has three children.

Nerses Genrikhovich Yeritsyan was born on February 23, 1971 in Yerevan.
From the year 1988-1993 he studied at the Yerevan State Institute of National Economy, Specialty - macroeconomists. He graduated from graduate school at the Yerevan State Institute of National Economy from 1993 to 1995.
  • 1993-1994 - Chief expert standing committee on social affairs and health of Supreme Soviet of Armenia.
• 1994-1995 - Assistant to the President of the Central Bank of Armenia.
• 1995-1996 - head of the monetary policy of the Central Bank of Armenia.
• 1996-2001 - Member of the Board of the Central Bank of Armenia.
• 2001-2003 - Adviser to the Executive Director, representing the Dutch group, the International Monetary Fund, including Armenia.
• 2003-2007 - Adviser to the President of the Central Bank of Armenia and the Interim Head of Center Financial Observations (2005).
• 2007-2008 - Minister of Trade and Industry of Armenia.
• From April 2008 became the Minister of Economy of Armenia.

Edward Nalbandian was born on July 16, 1956 in Erevan.

     * Since March 1999 - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia in France.
     * From January 2000 - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia in Israel.

Defence Minister of Armenia Print

20.jpgSeyran Ohanyan has been the Defence Minister of Armenia since April 14, 2008.

Personal details

Ohanyan was born in the town of Shusha, then a part of the Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. In 1979, he completed high school in the village of Mrgashen, in the region of Nairi in the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. Ohanyan attended the Baku Higher Joint Command College and completed his studies there in 1983.

He used to be the commander of the Nagorno-Karabakh Defense army. Ohanyan is a career officer who was serving in the Soviet military's 23rd Motor Rifle Division as a major before joining Nagorno-Karabakh's newly formed army in 1991 and playing a major role in the Nagorno-Karabakh war against Azerbaijan. He was seriously wounded in action in 1992 and had one of his legs amputated as a result of the injury.

In the government of Nagorno-Karabakh, Ohanyan served as Minister of Defense. Subsequently, he was appointed as chief of the general staff of the Armenian Armed Forces and First Deputy Minister of Defense of Armenia in 2007. After Serzh Sargsyan took office as President of Armenia, he appointed Ohanyan as Minister of Defense on April 14, 2008.
He is married and has three sons.
